A few years later came another setback—this one discovered in the most unexpected way.
For more than two decades, Darrell had told clients why keeping their life insurance current mattered. When his own term policy was nearing expiration, he followed the same advice and applied for a new one.
The required physical revealed something he never saw coming. Darrell felt healthy and had no symptoms, but further testing showed that 70 percent of his prostate was cancerous.
The policy application led to the physical that found the cancer.
Without the policy application, there may have been no physical. Without the physical, the cancer may have gone undetected until much later.
What followed was surgery, 37 rounds of radiation, six months of hormone therapy, and another long road back. Darrell has been cancer-free since the end of 2024.
Even then, Darrell focused on what he could do. When his doctor told him he could not run for eight weeks, Darrell walked instead. If his training plan called for a 60-minute run, he walked for 60 minutes. He could not move forward the way he wanted to, so he found another way.
